The future of the space economy is not
about rockets or astronauts. Instead, it
is about how businesses can harness
satellite data to make smarter decisions
on Earth.
According to Deloitte’s The Space Edge report,
South-East Asia could unlock US$100 billion
(A$143 billion) in economic value by 2030 using
space-enabled data across industries including
agriculture, mining, finance and electricity.
Michelle Khoo, co-leader of Deloitte’s Centre for
the Edge in South-East Asia, says leaders need to
rethink what the space economy actually means.
“Using space data to improve operations and
insight on Earth ... that is really driving the new
space economy. It is moving downstream into
looking at how we have all this data and sensors
being collected around the Earth and how we can
use that to improve life.”
LEVERAGING SPACE
Advances in satellite technology and AI are making
space-derived data more accessible than ever.
From monitoring crop health and predicting floods
to detecting methane leaks and assessing rooftops
for solar installations, satellite imagery is helping
organisations make faster, better-informed decisions.
“All of these use cases can greatly benefit from
the increased utilisation of satellite data to drive
activity and preserve the valuable things we need
to protect, such as sustainability and biodiversity,”
Khoo says.
However, she cautions that satellite technology is
not relevant for every business. Organisations with
large-scale assets, remote operations or sustainability
ambitions stand to gain the most by integrating
space-enabled data into everyday decision-making.
“Maybe the biggest takeaway is to think about
how you can use space. How can you leverage space
to develop your next edge in the next frontier of
your growth?”
