Drawing on his latest book, Inside the
Box: How Constraints Make Us Better,
journalist David Epstein shares strategies
for maintaining focus in an age of
constant distraction. He notes that
today’s workers switch screens every
45 seconds, compared with every
2.5 minutes two decades ago, while
warning against “self-interruption”,
where people become so accustomed
to distraction that they continue to
interrupt themselves when external
distractions are removed. The practical
tools Epstein recommends can help
improve focus and performance,
which are essential skills for managing

Beyond the paycheck
Would you trust AI for ethical
advice?
Counting what counts
When professionals feel their work
matters, they are more likely to
experience job satisfaction, wellbeing
and engagement — positives for
both them and their employer.
In this episode of How To Be Happy,
happiness researcher and host
Declan Edwards explores the concept
of contribution as part of a series on
the “7 Cs of Workplace Happiness”.
He explains why it matters and how
organisations can help employees feel
that they are making a meaningful
difference. With the accounting sector
in the midst of a talent shortage, this
episode offers useful insights for
employers looking to attract and
retain staff.

Many people are comfortable using
AI to make objective, data-driven
decisions, but they remain hesitant
to trust it in situations requiring
moral or ethical judgement.
However, researchers have found
that once people can see what AI tools
are capable of, they develop greater
trust in them. This article analyses
experiments that gauge participants’
perception of ethical advice delivered
by a human ethicist and a large
language model. The results indicate
that AI could be a useful tool in
ethical decision-making, particularly
when prompted to offer different
perspectives on a complex problem.
This United Nations report outlines
a global blueprint for moving beyond
gross domestic product (GDP) as
the primary measure of progress.
Counting what counts proposes
a dashboard of 31 indicators split into
environmental, health, human rights,
education and other domains, with
measures including life expectancy,
access to drinking water and wealth
distribution. According to United
Nations Secretary-General António
Guterres, the framework will provide
a fuller picture of the challenges
and opportunities facing the world.
Used alongside GDP, it aims to quantify
progress with greater consideration
to the planet and its inhabitants.
