When tax claims
go wild
The Australian Taxation Office
recently revealed some of the
wildest work-related expense tax
claims that it saw in the past year.
The most outrageous deduction
attempts include:
• A mechanic attempted to claim
an air fryer, two vacuum cleaners,
a TV, gaming console and gaming
accessories as work-related
expenses. The claim was denied
as the expenses were personal
in nature.
• A truck driver tried to claim
swimwear worn for a swim during
a transit stop on a hot day.
The claim was denied as the
expense was not related to
the driver’s work.
• A manager in the fashion industry
tried to claim more than A$10,000
in luxury-branded clothing and
accessories worn to work, events,
dinners and functions. The clothing
was all conventional and not
considered a uniform, so the claim
was denied.
