CLICK TO LAUNCH VIDEO IN A NEW WINDOW
People have been coming up with
ways to give constructive criticism
for centuries, but it can be a difficult
skill to learn. Cognitive psychologist
LeeAnn Renninger finds most people
fall into one of two camps – either
they are indirect and soft, or they
are too direct, which can prompt the
other person to become defensive.
In this TED Talk, Renninger shares
her four-part strategy for giving
effective feedback, which includes
the benefits of being specific, why
a conversation works better than
a monologue and why people who
are good at giving feedback often
ask for feedback themselves.

Design your own promotion
Valuing a retirement-age
workforce
Generation Y at work
More than ever, a proactive
approach to career advancement
is not merely advisable – it is
essential, according to this blog
from recruitment firm Hays Australia.
Gone are the days when the career
path resembled a ladder – today, it is
much closer to “a complex labyrinth
of opportunities and challenges”.
There is a high value on thinking
about promotions in terms of
organisational goals, continuous
learning and strategic thinking about
one’s industry, for example, but
employees keen to move up should
also consider building relationships
with key stakeholders to develop
a support network. In addition,
it never hurts professionals to learn
how to showcase their expertise.

A growing number of workers are
reaching retirement age around
the globe. In this episode of HBR
Ideacast, Ken Dychtwald, co-founder
and CEO of Age Waves, believes
organisations need to make bold
changes in how they value and
create opportunities for older
workers. Dychtwald says there are
a lot of talented people in their 60s
and 70s who are doing their best
work and, if they are not valued,
they will walk out the door, taking
their skills and experience with
them. He discusses older workers’
motivations for continuing work and
offers strategies for companies to
rethink how they approach talent
and manage older workers.
Millennials, or Generation Y,
have a novel perspective on
work that makes attracting,
engaging and training them
a challenge for employers to
get right. This article from
demographer Mark McCrindle
looks at Generation Y at work,
delving into what employers
can offer them.
It covers why Gen Y seeks
opportunity at work rather than
just a job, along with a varied job
role, workplace culture and lifestyle
benefits. Flexibility is also a big
drawcard for this generation,
who want to study, travel and
maintain their work–life balance
as they undertake multiple paths
during their career.
