ETHICS AND DECISION-MAKING
TV series creator and writer
Michael Schur recounts a moral
dilemma that changed his
approach to decision-making.
Having offered to donate money
to Hurricane Katrina relief efforts
instead of paying damages for a car
accident, Schur realised his good
intentions opposed ethical theories
from Aristotle and Immanuel Kant.
Since then, Schur has studied
moral philosophy, so that if a similar
moral dilemma arises, he will be able
to navigate it ethically. He proposes
a strategy for others to follow, so
they too can make better decisions.

Bad Bets is a podcast series from
The Wall Street Journal that chronicles
prominent business dramas. Season
two charts the rise and fall of Nikola
founder Trevor Milton.
Milton claimed he could produce
zero-emissions long-haul trucks and
revolutionise the trucking industry.
At its peak, Nikola was worth more
than Ford Motor. Milton was ultimately
convicted on US federal fraud charges
when it was revealed he had boasted
about non-existent technology to
inflate Nikola’s stock price.
The series features interviews
with people caught in Milton’s web,
from engineers and investors to the
whistleblowers who took him down.
In 2022, central banks bought gold
at the fastest pace since 1967. This
is a vastly different tactic to that
employed in the 1990s and early
2000s, when the same institutions
were more intent on selling.
This infographic from Visual
Capitalist and its accompanying
explanation draw on data from the
World Gold Council, Metals Focus
and Refinitiv GFMS to chart 30 years
of central bank gold demand.
It explores how attitudes towards
gold have changed during this
time. It also lists the countries
that have purchased the most
gold and highlights what drives
the decision to stockpile or sell.
From the Pearls and Irritations
blog, published by former public
servant John Menadue, this article
discusses a conundrum facing wealthy
nations. What is more expensive
to mitigate – the rise of climate
change or its resulting effects?
Menadue says the options are to let
climate change wreck the economy and
environment or to plan an economic
reduction to prioritise “the essentials
of life”. The notion of “degrowth” –
reducing resource consumption while
ensuring everyone has what they need
– is detrimental to economic growth.
However, some economists argue
that it could be the only sustainable
strategy for planetary survival.
