How to turn setbacks
into success
TED Talk, Amy Shoenthal: How to turn setbacks into success
When professional setbacks,
disruptions or redundancies occur,
it is difficult to know how to recover.
In this talk, author, journalist and
speaker Amy Shoenthal explains
how — after hundreds of interviews
with founders, business leaders,
celebrities and cultural icons — she
discovered a commonality: what they
learned during their biggest setback
led them to their most successful
venture. But why? Diving into three
years of research on the topic,
Shoenthal resurfaced with
“The Setback Cycle” — four phases
to turn setbacks into success.

A toolkit to help you manage
uncertainty around AI
Meet the youngest self-made
female billionaire
The state of AI in
accounting 2024
Uncertainty around artificial intelligence
(AI) takes three main forms, write
researchers Oguz A. Acar and
Bob Bastian in this article for
Harvard Business Review. State, effect
and response uncertainty are triggered
by factors such as the unpredictability
of market trends and changes, and AI’s
potential impact on business. The
authors recommend a toolkit of tactics
that managers can adopt to navigate
these uncertainties and AI solutions
to implement within their business.
With AI advocates highlighting the
technology’s capacity to improve
productivity, among other benefits,
this is an informative guide for
organisations hoping to unlock
AI opportunities.
Good Bad Billionaire shines the
spotlight on a different billionaire
each episode, analysing their minds,
motives and how they made their
money. This episode focuses
on “queen of the swipes” Whitney
Wolfe Herd, founder of the dating
app Bumble and one of the
co-founders of Tinder. She is the
world’s youngest self-made female
billionaire at the age of 31 and
one of a small group of female
tech founders. The hosts recount
Wolf Herd’s rise to billionaire status,
then score her according to how
far she’s come, her philanthropy
efforts and villainy. Ultimately, they
judge whether she is good, bad
or just another billionaire.
This global report from accounting
software firm Karbon analyses survey
responses from accounting
professionals about their AI thoughts,
habits, feelings, predictions and plans
for the future. Interestingly, 82 per cent
of accountants are intrigued or excited
by AI, yet only 25 per cent are actively
investing in AI training for their teams.
The report also found that enthusiasm
about AI depends on a person’s role
within a firm, with owners, partners
and directors more likely to embrace it.
Plus, many accountants are not
worried about AI replacing them, but
are concerned what the bookkeeper
role will look like in future.
