FROM THE DESK
Career, elevated
Welcome to this special careers edition of INTHEBLACK.
I grew up on a farm in country Australia and went on to work in boardrooms around
the globe. I’ve always been interested in engaging work and having a rewarding career.
When I was in primary school, my parents told me that, no matter what you do,
you should try your best. I realise now that the earlier you focus on your strengths,
the more satisfying your career will be.
I think it’s important to plan your career. However, that doesn’t mean everything
will go to plan. If an opportunity arises, look outside your comfort zone. I’ve
reinvented myself from public practitioner to company director and executive coach.
Rarely do we end up regretting these decisions.
When starting out, you’re focused on gaining technical skills. These are important
but, the more senior positions you hold, the more you’ll need soft skills to ensure you
bring people along with you.
In my experience, the earlier you find leadership opportunities, the better for your
ability to try different things and progress. Of course, it’s vital to keep learning.
Mentoring offers a chance to elevate others. For young professionals, a mentor
can provide an invaluable sounding board.
In my video for this special edition, I speak more about the lessons I’ve learned
during my accounting career.
As 2022 ends and the curtain lifts on a new year, it’s a great time to think about
what your career means to you. Whatever your aspirations, I hope you find this
issue motivating.
