industries with greater agility. Individuals employ
various strategies for continuous learning, such as
acquiring professional certifications like the CPA
designation, engaging in online courses and webinars,
attending conferences and workshops, seeking
mentorship opportunities, immersing themselves in the
latest industry blogs and podcasts, and honing their
skills through on-the-job experiences and involvement
in professional associations like CPA Australia.
In my own journey, two pivotal areas have
helped with my career. First, I’ve discovered the
immeasurable value of mentors who challenge
and foster holistic development. It is not just
about technical skills – I am a tax practitioner! –
but also about honing interpersonal skills, including
problem-solving, teamwork and critical thinking.
Second, one of the most transformative upskilling
experiences I have had was pursuing a PhD in taxation
law. Beyond the technical and legal complexities,
this journey was a crucible for analytical and critical
thinking about emerging challenges in the taxation
of electronic commerce. This journey developed
many facets of my character, instilling resilience
and a perpetual pursuit of self-improvement.
Ultimately, the effectiveness of upskilling in your
career will hinge on your current role, long-term
aspirations and the ever-evolving trends within
your industry. Embrace the challenge to be the
